Anaphora ontstond in 2018 uit een toevallige ontmoeting van de drie muzikanten – Filippo Deorsola, Jonathan Ho-Chin Kiat en Ap Verhoeven – tijdens een last-minute jamsessie in CODARTS, het conservatorium waar ze destijds allen studeerden.

De ’toevallige’ ontmoeting via improvisatie was in feite helemaal geen toeval: in de vier jaar van zijn bestaan heeft de band zijn specifieke, kleurrijke geluid opgebouwd rond speelse verkenningen van improvisatie als een instrument van muzikaal onderzoek en een essentiële methode om bruggen te bouwen tussen muzikale verschillen en over deze heen.

Van de klassieke liedvormen tot niet-idiomatische improvisatie, van hedendaagse klassieke muziek tot rauwe evocaties van de Blues die de Jazz en zijn geschiedenis doordrenken, met Anaphora kan men alleen het onverwachte verwachten. Dat is de schoonheid van improvisatie die Anaphora met het publiek wil delen, telkens als ze spelen. In zijn diepste wezen betekent improvisatie twee van de meest fundamentele menselijke eigenschappen: de behoefte om te communiceren – betekenis te vormen – in deze wereld, en de kracht die voortkomt uit de menselijke vindingrijkheid tegenover het sonische onverwachte.

Anaphora was created back in 2018 out of a fortuitous encounter of the three musicians – Filippo Deorsola, Jonathan Ho-Chin Kiat and Ap Verhoeven – during a last-minute jam session at CODARTS, the conservatoire where they all studied at the time.

Meeting ‘by chance’ through improvisation was in fact no coincidence at all : over its four years of existence, the band has built its specific, colourful sound around playful explorations of improvisation as a tool of musical research and an essential method of building bridges through musical differences and beyond them.

From the classic song-forms to non-idiomatic improvisation, from contemporary classical music to raw evocations of the Blues permeating Jazz and its history, with Anaphora one can only expect the unexpected. That is the beauty of improvisation that Anaphora wants to share with the public every time they play. At its deepest, improvisational practice signifies two of the most fundamental human traits: the need to communicate – form meaning – in this world, and the power that comes from human resourcefulness in face of the sonically unexpected.
